Let Go, and Let God (?)
Recently, I have struggled with this saying: “Let go and Let God.” What does it mean?
Years ago, when I was commuting between college and home for the Christmas Holidays, I met a fellow passenger who said she was a Christian who gave her life to Jesus. That is great! I mentioned I am a Christian. Then, she asked me, “Do you sin?” I said, “I do sin quiet often; I’m sorry to say.” Without hesitation, she said, “I don’t sin anymore; Jesus died for my sins.”
This is a version of “Let go and Let God.” She let go of all and let God fix it! She didn’t have to do anything more! No personal transformation. No becoming a better person. She has her golden ticket to go to heaven.
God wants us to ask for help. God wants us to transform. God wants us to be a better person. Becoming a Christian is only the beginning.
When our children have personal issues or social conflicts, we ask them to fix their problems, and we offer our help. We want them to grow and be best versions of themselves.
Why do we treat our relationship with God so differently than our human relationships? Do we think God doesn’t want us to ask for help? Do we think God doesn’t want us to grow as persons? Do we think God doesn’t know how to help us?
“Let Go and Let God” help us?
Let Go: Dragon’s Coins?
I know in my life I can hoard my wounds like the dragon guarding gold coins. The dragon has no use for gold coins. The dragon just says, “I have more gold coins than you!” What can a dragon buy? Also, the coins do not represent any accepted national currency. They are useless.
Let God: Personal Transformation
I believe the core of Christianity is not our getting to heaven and avoiding hell. Christianity is about forming and “using” our relationship with God to transform into a better person. Our transformation is the true treasure of the Kingdom of God. This is a healing process.
The other day, my family and I were traveling through airports while I was carrying a heavy backpack. When we got to our gate, I put my backpack on the floor. I physically felt lighter. I thought I was going to fly!
By letting go off control, our wounds may be transformed into useable gold coins. We may be transformed into gold coins.
I think the “Let Go, and Let God” defines an interactive, transforming relationship with God. This is a better prayer: “May I let go of my control and let God help me to transform into a better person.”
“Let Go, and Let God” heal me.
